How can a Doula help you?

End-of-life doula care is supportive non-medical care that can take place at home or hospital and hospice facilities. It can involve active advocacy and care during the process or begin far ahead in planning so that life can be lived fully in the present. Increasing quality of life for clients and their families is the main goal while maintaining patient/client respect and autonomy.

Advocacy

End of Life Doulas can act as advocates for their clients and caregivers, helping with effective communication with medical team making sure that personal autonomy is respected and kept with wishes previously discussed.

Holistic Based Care

Enlisting a doula to help navigate end of life care takes a holistic approach, accessing not just physical comforts,  but well-being and quality of life in emotional, psychological and spiritual care that approaches life as a whole package. Palliative and Hospice care are important aspects to the medical care one receives and doula work aims to assist along side the medical scope of practice.

Time

Doulas have the gift of time and the lack of restriction to what may be “covered” by the American medical system and insurances. We provide a consistent presence to help comfort and navigate through the chaos and emotional challenges that come with the end of life. Getting to know clients well and spend time understanding their wishes helps us advocate for their care.

Personalized Support

The most important aspect of being a doula is flexibility. Each client and their care is individual and can change quickly. Being adaptable to respite care that may include errands, sitting vigil at the bedside with family for support, or finding solutions to new concerns is why we are here. To share the burden, to advocate, to fill in the needed space.

Prior to End of Life Care (Legacy)

How would you like to leave your legacy? Gifting, recordings, letters, journaling, and donations to causes are just a few options for legacy projects you can begin far before any terminal diagnosis.

Practical Planning of Funeral Wishes and Arrangements

Discussing end of life care and reviewing DDNR, 5 Wishes, organ or body donation and helping to plan memorial services are subject matters that often are difficult to discuss with family. Doulas offer an impartial space to discuss and put in place your choices.
